Retirement Choice and Its Relation to Depression

Abstract

|
The purpose of this project is to investigate the short-term effect of retirement choice on post-retirement depression in a sample of 234 retirees, all drawn from the first wave of the 1992 Health and Retirement Survey in America. While controlling for disruptive marital life events, change in self-rated health status, spousal social support, adverse health conditions, retirement choice still had a slight association with post-retirement depressive symptoms. Being in control over the retirement event help retirees maintain a better mental health.
